Why do people believe Extra-Terrestrials may have been responsible for Maya Architecture?

Due to the vast number of mysterious hieroglyphs found inside Mayan temples, giant "landing strip-lke" terrain markings and the famous 13 perfectly shaped (crystal is very difficult to shape) crystal skulls, and their sophisticated knowledge of the stars, some believe the Mayan had outside help.  One such believer is Erich Von Daniken, author of Chariot of the Gods; in his book, he describes how markings found on a Mayan Sarcophagus' depict possible "ancient astronauts" who may have been in contact with the Maya Indians.
