Why was Mayan astronomy so sophisticated?

 

Because of the degree of sophistication of Mayan Mathematics.   The Sun and Venus were of particular interest to the Maya Indians, and Maya Astronomers were able to measure the aligment of the planets, the resulting information being used in creating the Mayan calendar, and predicting seasonal changes. Maya Kings held accession rituals in precise tuning with the Milky Way and the stars.
Mayan Pyramids are a testament to their evolved Scientific knowledge; the complexity of their structure and its relation to planetary movement have often cause much speculation as to their true origin...
