A Brief History of the
Mayan Empire |
Who was the Mayan God Quetzalcoatl? |
Quetzalcoatl , the plumed serpent, was a mythical ruling deity. Even if not the most powerful or one of the eldest of Gods in the Mesoamerican pantheon, , He was one of the most important, worshipped as creator and as the god of culture, learning, philosophy, fertility, sanctity and good will. When Cortez and his army arrived at Tenochtitlan in 1519, he was mistaken by Maya Chief Montezuma for Quetzalcoatl returning from the East with his army.
