The Mayan were a generally peaceful civilization, but since they were sedentary, they needed to defend themselves from invaders so, they were also very efficient warriors.  The Mayan Empire fell under the might of the Totltecs, eventually becoming the Maya-Tolteca; one of the most powerful civilizations ever to exist in "The Land of the Sun".  Of course, the arrival of Cortez and his army at Tenochtitlan in 1519 changed all that...
