Were Mayan villages built alongside waterways, or were they built inland?

Mayan Villages were built inland, in the South American Jungle, in central areas where rivers flowed.  Mayan cities were generally elevated stone structures which surrounded the pyramids.  Mayan ceremonial temples were usually built atop the pyramid, in order to be closer to the Sun.
